Weekend double- header for karting
JAMAICA Karting Association (JKA) is heading for one of its biggest weekends yet at the Palisadoes International Raceway in Kingston, this weekend.
Events are scheduled for Saturday, July 13 and Sunday, July 14.
“We decided to have there two race meets over this weekend to provide more racing for visitors,” Neil Williams, president of the JKA, told the Jamaica Observer’s weekly Auto magazine.
The racing action is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am on both days. To keep things interesting, Sunday will see the track run in reverse.
“It will be scored as two separate events,” Williams said.
The compressed time factor means those chasing the Abe Ziadie Championship trophy, the sport’s highest honour, have the chance to grab as much points as they can. Williams expects karting’s top drivers in attendance, but there will be several overseas challengers, including Alex Powell. Powell is son of Jamaican rally driver John Powell. At age 11, he made history when he became the first Jamaican and Caribbean driver to ever be signed to a Formula 1 team, motorsport’s top tier. In March, the young karter joined the Mercedes-AMG F1 Junior programme. He will race in the Mini Max class this weekend.
“The JKA is extremely happy that Alex will be racing and sharing his skills with our local drivers. We hope Alex will continue to support our club and race in Jamaica when he has the time,” said Williams.
