#Doha2019: Great Britain’s Asher-Smith takes women’s 200 metres
Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain is the women’s 200 metres
champion at the 17th World Championships in Doha, Qatar as she won
the final on Wednesday.
Asher-Smith ran a blistering curve and came into the home stretch with a slight lead over Brittany Brown of the United States of
America. As the American pulled beside her with about 90 metres to go,
Asher-Smith powered away to win comfortably.
The time of 21.88 seconds is a new national record for Great
Britain, as Brown did a personal best of 22.22 with Mujinga Kambundji of
Switzerland finishing third in 22.51.
It was the first time that Great Britain was winning the 200
metres at the World Championships as Asher-Smith added to her silver medal in
the 100 metres, behind Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.
No Jamaicans qualified for the final of the 200 metres.
