Crimson now getting his act together
Trainer Gary Subratie and owner/breeder Michael Bernard teamed up for the second time to land a rare back-to-back double on the opening day of the inaugural LASCO Distributors Limited two-day Superstakes Weekend Racing Carnival at Caymanas Park on Saturday with promising full brothers — two-year-old juvenile classic prospect Wow Wow and Crimson .
Wow Wow, the most promising two-year-old to grace the track this season, started the double strike in the seventh race with a 12-length-plus carnage of fellow two-year-old dashers going six- and-a-half furlongs (1,300m), while his three-year-old brother Crimson stepped up to take the following eighth-race caper with a hefty 45-1 winning odds going a little farther over seven and a half furlongs (1,500m) with champion jockey Anthony Thomas up.
The recent performances by Wow Wow were what Subratie and Bernard were anticipating with Crimson as a two-year-old, but the equally talented older brother had a setback and is only now getting his act together, leaving the trainer and owner/breeder pleasantly hopeful.
So said trainer Subratie after Crimson won hands down the LASCO Oats eighth race for imported three-year-old and upward NW3 and maidens/native-bred three-year-old and native-bred four-year-old NW4 for the major share of the $1,000,000 on offer.
Crimson won by 1 ¾ lengths ahead of Princess Ava (Reyan Lewis) and Earn Your Stripes (Linton Steadman) in a time of 1:33.0 minutes.
“He ran really well today; I could not ask any better of him because of 1:33 in a class such as this that is not bad today. Now let us see what he does from here onward. He shows you that he does like the sloppy conditions,” Subratie said.
