GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — Forward Trayon Bobb scored a first-half double as Guyana rescued their Concacaf Nations League fortunes with a convincing 5-1 victory over Antigua and Barbuda here Monday night.

The 25-year-old found the nets in just the second minute and returned to score nearing the half-hour mark, as the hosts established a 2-0 lead at half-time.

D’Andre Bishop halved the advantage on resumption but Sheldon Holder (65th), Kadell Daniel (77th) and Pernell Schultz (90th) all added goals in the second half to sweep Guyana over the line.

For Guyana, the victory was a vital one, breaking a two-game losing streak, and pushing them up to second on six points in Group C of League B behind unbeaten Jamaica.

Playing at the Leonora National Track and Field Centre in Leonora, Guyana came out swinging and were rewarded almost immediately, when Bobb capitalised on a defensive mix-up and slotted past goalkeeper Murphy Parker.

He was on target again in the 29th minute after being put through by Emery Welshman as Guyana took command of the encounter.

When 17-year-old Bishop pulled one back for Antigua, the contest suddenly became an open affair but those hopes by the visiting team were quickly squashed when Holder restored Guyana’s two-goal advantage with a 64th minute header.

Daniel then netted the crucial fourth goal 13 minutes later before Schultz capped off the rout with an injury-time strike, the defeat leaving Antigua third in the standings, also on six points.

In Group D at Windsor Park, hosts Dominica suffered their fourth loss in as many outings when they went down 4-0 to Nicaragua, to be relegated to League C.

And in the same group, unbeaten leaders St Vincent and the Grenadines picked up an important 1-0 win away to Suriname, thanks to Cornelius Stewart’s 68th-minute strike.

In Group D of League C, Sint Maarten went down 2-1 to Guadeloupe at home in Willemstad to lose their third match in as many outings and suffer elimination.
