Clarendon, Frome score wins in D’Cup quarters
FROME, Westmoreland — Defending champions Clarendon College and former winners Frome Technical scored impressive wins as they opened their quarter-final schedules in the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/WATA daCosta Cup football competition at Frome Sports Complex yesterday.
Sheldon Smart scored a double as Clarendon College came from a goal down to beat Manning’s School 2-1, while Devin Johnson and Giovanni Mitoo both got braces as Frome ran roughshod over Petersfield in their Westmoreland derby that was played after heavy rains had pushed the start back by 40 minutes.
Clarendon College took over the lead in Group One over Anchovy High on goal difference, while Frome Technical, a semi-finalists last season, surged to the top of Group Three ahead of Dinthill Technical.
While the first game between Clarendon College and Manning’s School was played in bright sunshine, a sudden shower of rain just after the game forced a late start to the second game and left large puddles of water and muddy conditions.
Manning’s School, who overturned a loss to Ocho Rios High in their second-round fixtures to win and advance, took the lead after just seven minutes following a good start.
Smart brought Clarendon College level in the 26th minute then gave them the lead in the 63rd minute when he dribbled down the right flank, cut into the middle of the field, before firing past goalkeeper Ngozi Thompson.
In the second game, Frome Technical, who only advanced after beating Vere Technical on penalty kicks, left nothing to chance and took the lead in the sixth minute when Johnson shot home from a goal-mouth melee.
He doubled the score midway the half before Mittoo made it 3-0 just before half-time, then added a second in the second half, while Clifton Suban added a fifth.
