Nelson boots home three-timer, as Walker, Mamdeen score doubles

Former three-time champion jockey Dane “Warrior Chief” Nelson continued his good form since returning from Canada last month after booting home three winners to highlight a trophyless, 10-race programme at Caymanas Park yesterday.

Nelson’s winners were highlighted by a brilliant ride aboard the Anthony Nunes-conditioned Patriarch, who returned from a four-month break to beat rivals in the top-rated Non-Restricted Overnight Allowance event over the five-furlong (1,000m) straight course.

The four-year-old bay colt by Casual Trick – Electrifying, in a bold front-running effort, defeated stable companion Prince Charles (Aaron Chatrie) by three parts of a length in a quick 57.3 seconds, chopping splits 22.3 x 44.3. K D Flyer (Dane Dawkins) and American Invader (Omar Walker) completed the frame in that order.

The bustling Nelson also won aboard Lazer Light for breeder, owner and trainer Gary Griffiths in the sixth race, and closed the programme aboard Dreamingofanna for owner and trainer Michael Marlowe. With those three winners, Nelson has tallied 19 winners from seven race meets.

It was the second winner on the card for Nunes as he had won with K J Express in the seventh race under apprentice Christopher Mamdeen. Mamdeen completed a double when he won aboard Rachael’s Grace for trainer Gary Subratie in the following race.

Omar Walker, also had two winners in Sir Alton for trainer Wayne DaCosta in the second race, and Miss In Kiss for trainer Gresford Smith in the fourth race.

Racing continues today with a 10-race programme with three trophy races on offer with the $1.15-million Gladiator Trophy over seven furlongs (1,400m) being the main feature.
