Waterhouse, Cavalier to contest JFF Women’s Premier League final
DEFENDING champions Waterhouse Football Club will be seeking their second title of the season when they tackle arch-rivals Cavalier Football Club in the 2019 Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Women’s Premier League final at Spanish Town Prison Oval, starting at 3:00 pm today.
It is a repeat of last year’s final when Waterhouse scored a convincing 5-1 win to retain the title.
Both teams will meet for the second time, having met in the mid-season final when Waterhouse registered a narrow 2-1 win at the UWI-JFF Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence in October.
In their two-way semi-finals, they scored convincing 6-2 and 5-2 aggregate wins over Olympic Gardens FC, and Arnett Gardens FC, respectively.
Waterhouse’s Coach Xavier Gilbert says today’s game should be much tougher than last year, as Cavalier have improved tremendously, especially in the midfield.
“Their momentum has been getting better and I cannot see Waterhouse winning by any significant wide margin, though we will be looking forward to win.”
Gilbert will be looking to his two his leading goalscorers — national representative Shantel Bailey with 27 goals, and Davia Richards with 16 goals.
Both players should receive support from their attacking midfielders.
Meanwhile, Everdean Scarlett, coach of Cavalier, confirmed that his team has improved tremendously since losing 1-5 to Waterhouse in the League final last year, having lost 1-2 in the mid-season final.
Scarlett believes the final will be a very good game that spectators should come out and watch. “It is expected to be tougher and more competitive than last year’s, as my players are ready to take the challenge to Waterhouse, but they need to score goals from opportunities they create.
“I am not taking anything away from Waterhouse as they are a very good team, but I see Cavalier having a good chance of winning,” he added.
Rena Gordon, Cavalier’s left link, is the team’s leading goalscorer with 20 goals, and a lot will rest on her shoulders to keep her team on the hunt for victory.
