Red Stripe Premier League strugglers The University of the West Indies (UWI) Football Club and Harbour View Football Club did themselves no favours when they played out a 1-1 result at the UWI Mona Bowl on Sunday.

A 21st-minute strike from Jabari Hylton gave the hosts a 1-0 half-time lead, but the advantage was wiped out shortly after the restart when Jevaun Bascoe levelled for the visitors in the 51st minute.

The result means Harbour View move up to 20 points and remain in ninth place, while the UWI are on 14 points and now in the drop zone in 11th place.

Harbour View started the brighter of the two with their Captain Romario Campbell dictating most of the play from midfield, but it was the UWI who created the first chance of the game on the counter-attack. Trivante Stewart chose to shoot from an acute angle in a three-on-three situation rather than cross to his teammates inside the box.

Stewart was then guilty of a glaring miss after he headed over the crossbar when ideally positioned inside the box and under no pressure.

A minute later, Hylton made no mistake with his first clear sight on goal when he fired past Tafari Chambers in the Harbour View goal.

Oshane Staple flashed a shot across the face of goal on the overlap as the “Stars of the East” went in search of an equaliser.

That is as close as the visitors would get in the first half.

The first chance of the second half went to Ryan Miller as the ball fell kindly to the UWI striker after a challenge from the Harbour View defenders, but his hooked effort went high over the crossbar.

Bascoe would then profit from the UWI defenders being out of place a few minutes later, as he was left with little to do to beat a hapless Amal Knight in the UWI goal from 12 yards out.

Both teams created a few half chances later in the game but at the end of the 90 minutes it was a fair result based on the run of play.

Andrew Peart rued the soft goal that his team gave up to allow the visitors a share of the spoils.

“The way we conceded I think that, that’s just something that keeps haunting us. I would rather Harbour View muster up some great play to find an equaliser rather than the way they did, because I thought we gave away the ball too easily and that led to their goal.”

Visiting Coach Damion Stewart was pleased with the improved play of his charges.

“Obviously we came here looking for three points but I am more impressed with the improvement of the performance, so we are going step by step,” he said.
