Quarter-miler Day targets individual Olympic medal in Tokyo
WHILE Christine Day was happy to leave the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, with her second 4x400m relay silver medal, the 400m specialist is dreaming of even bigger things for the Tokyo Olympic Games this year.
Day got her second race of the season in during the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) Qualification Trials Series at National Stadium last Saturday and was happy to be back on her old stomping ground.
“I’m just happy that I can actually compete right now because, I mean, I’ve been out of competition for over a year,” she said.
Like most other athletes who have suffered greatly from a lack of competitive action, Day is patiently trying to get back into her stride.
“Right now I’m just trying to just catch my race rhythm and today [Saturday] wasn’t my best day. But, I’m thankful that I can race another day again because I’m healthy.”
With three World Relay medals, which include two silver and a bronze already in her collection, the Cameron Blazers athlete is looking to add to her bounty come May.
“Well, I’m really excited to represent my country again. It’s been a while and the World Relays will be one of the first ones, so I am just looking forward to just be a part of that team,” said Day.
The quarter-miler isn’t bothered by the much-talked-about late start to the season and is confident that Jamaica’s teams to the international events will be ready when the time comes.
“No, I’m not worried because I believe that even though we’re behind with races, we have good training camps out here and we are competitive in our training sessions and I think we’ll be ready when it is time,” Day noted.
Her ultimate goal for 2021 is to stand on the podium in Tokyo in what would be her third-consecutive Olympic Games.
“[My goal] for this year [is] to make the Olympic team — not only to make the team but also to be on top of the podium,” Day said.
The first major championships for the senior athletes will be the World Relays in Chorzow, Poland, May 1-2.
