Hey Baby and Underneath It All, recorded by No Doubt with Bounty Killer and Lady Saw respectively, were certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on March 8. Each song has sold more than 500,000 copies.

Hey Baby was released in October 2001 by Interscope Records. Almost 20 years later, the deejay credits it for giving him worldwide exposure.

“Di collaboration opened some international opportunities for me at di time. It afforded me a collaboration with Diana King. I was invited to di Super Bowl to perform with No Doubt. I was interviewed by Top of The Pops [a highly rated British music show] made by di BBC, which gave much exposure to di music. Hey Baby did so well dat it won a Grammy an’ I was also invited to be there to receive di award,” Bounty shared in an interview with the Jamaica Observer. “Additionally, I won two MTV Video Music Awards. All these opportunities gave me an’ reggae music di exposure it needed.”

Hey Baby was recorded at Geejam Studio in Portland and One Pop Studio in Kingston. It was produced by Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare with Rory Baker as engineer. No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani, Tony Kanal and Tom Dumont co-wrote the song with Bounty Killer.

“At di time of di recording I was in di prime of my life. Somehow, I always had it in mind dat di collaboration was going to be a big hit. Years later, it proved I was right,” said Bounty.

Hey Baby was the lead single from No Doubt’s Rock Steady album which sold more than four million copies worldwide.

The single charted at number two in the United Kingdom and number five on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. It also made the Top 10 in Scotland, Germany, Greece, New Zealand, Norway, Romania, Australia, Croatia, Denmark and Finland.

At the 45th Grammy Awards in February 2003, Hey Baby won Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

Underneath It All was the third single from Rock Steady. Released on August 15 2002, it peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 (No Doubt’s highest ranking single to date on that chart), while hitting number two on Billboard’s Adult Top 40 and number one on Billboard’s US Mainstream Top 40 charts.

Outside of the US, Underneath it All hit number 18 in the United Kingdom, while charting in Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden and Switzerland.

The song won the Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the 46th Grammy Awards in February 2004.

Underneath It All was featured in the 2004 movie 50 First Dates, which starred Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. Tessanne Chin did a rendition of it in November 2013 during her winning campaign on The Voice.
