Kyle Mitchell extends shot put PB to 18.88m
Kyle Mitchell continued his assault on the shot put records at Liberty University after he won the event at the 93rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, on Saturday with a new outdoors personal best 18.88m to beat his old school record 18.70m.
The former Calabar High School Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association Champs winner who also has the indoor record at Liberty, threw 18.78m on Saturday, erasing the old mark he set in at the NACAC Under-23 Championships in July 2019.
Warren Barrett Jr, who was fifth with a college-best 18.45m, moved one spot from fifth to fourth on the Liberty top 10 rankings. Mitchell was also ninth in the men’s discus throw with a mark of 49.00m.
Former National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) indoors triple jump champion Jordan Scott was also a winner on Saturday at the San Diego State University Aztec Invitational, while there were wins for Jamaicans at the Penn Challenge in Philadelphia.
Scott, of the University of Southern California, who is second in the NCAA triple jump ranking behind compatriot O’Brien Wasome of the University of Texas, jumped a wind-aided 16.55m (2.3m/s) to win easily in San Diego.
Former County of Cornwall Athletics Association Western Champs Class One record holder Roschell Clayton of Villanova University won the high jump at the Penn Challenge with a clearance of 1.70m after she had cleared 1.80m a few weeks earlier, third-best ever at the Philadelphia area school.
Former St Jago High athlete Tannekee Strachan of Temple University won the triple jump with 12.40m.
Lamara Distin is the joint fourth best ever in the women’s high jump at Texas A&M University after she placed third in the high jump at Texas Relays with 1.85m.
Distin, who is also in the school’s top 10 in the indoor high jump, participated in her first college triple jump competition, recording 13.04m on her second effort before retiring.
Former Immaculate Conception thrower Kadian Clarke of Eastern Michigan had a personal best 55.47m for ninth place at the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State University.
At the Big 10 Invite at the University of Indiana, Devia Brown was second in the shot put with 16.54m.
