KINGSTON, Jamaica — Pharmaceutical company Dr Reddy’s Laboratory has donated essential medication valued at US$215,000 to bolster Jamaica’s ongoing recovery from Hurricane Melissa.

The National Health Fund (NHF) received the donation at an official handover ceremony held Tuesday at the NHF Head Office in New Kingston.

The contribution includes 42,500 packages of antibiotics, nutritional supplements and chronic illness medications in capsule, tablet and syrup form.

The NHF will distribute the supplies across the parishes hardest hit by the hurricane as it continues efforts to restore health services and ensure access to treatment.

Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Christopher Tufton, welcomed the donation, describing it as an extension of Dr Reddy’s longstanding partnership with Jamaica.

“This is timely and demonstrates the relationship and social conscience that you possess beyond your corporate mission,” he said. “The NHF has risen to the occasion in creating alternative approaches to get medication to the population, and the people are very grateful.”

Since Hurricane Melissa’s passage, the NHF has expanded its mobile pharmacy network to reach approximately 60 communities, many in remote areas where access to care remains limited.

NHF Chief Executive Officer Everton Anderson said the donation will significantly strengthen the agency’s outreach.

“This donation will go a long way in Jamaica’s recovery. The NHF was among the first agencies to go out into the field after the hurricane, and it is truly a joy to support so many,” he said. “We extend heartfelt thanks to Dr Reddy’s Laboratories for their continued support.”

Representing the High Commission of India, First Secretary Yash Pal Singh described the donation as a gesture of friendship and solidarity.

“This ceremony is much more than the transfer of medical supplies; it is a confirmation of our longstanding relationship with India and the Jamaican people, grounded in trust, cooperation, and shared human values. The response today by Dr Reddy’s Laboratories reflects not only their corporate commitment but also their humanitarian spirit.”

With more than 90 per cent of public-sector pharmacies now back in operation, health officials say the donation will help meet increased demand for medication and support recovery efforts in the most severely affected communities.
