North Ave closed to facilitate emergency works- NWC
KINGSTON, Jamaica—The National Water Commission (NWC) says the erosion of back-filling material along North Avenue in St Andrew has resulted in the closure of that roadway to facilitate emergency reinstatement works.
The NWC said today’s heavy rains led to saturation and erosion of pipe-laying trenches, resulting in sections of the roadway being adversely impacted.
The commission said its work crews are now on site effecting the required refilling process.
Until the refilling process is completed, the road will have to be closed, the NWC said.
Motorists are being urged to use alternative routes as the NWC moves quickly to effect the repairs.
The NWC said as part of a comprehensive plan to upgrade the sewerage infrastructure in parts of the Corporate Area, a section of the aged sewer line along North Avenue had been replaced with a 315-diameter or 12-inch line.
The replacement works were necessary as a section of the line recently collapsed, the NWC said.
The agency said this improved sewage infrastructure will benefit residents of central Kingston, parts of downtown Kingston and sections of North Avenue.
Following the completion of that work, measures, including the use of backfilling materials such as marl, were put in place to temporarily reinstate the roadway until permanent reinstatement is carried out.
