COVID-19: Here’s what you need to know today
KINGSTON, Jamaica— The novel coronavirus has infected more than 181 million people, leaving more than 3.9 million dead across 196 countries and territories.
The majority of those infected have recovered and many countries have rolled out vaccine campaigns as economies struggle to recover from the pandemic.
– Jamaica recorded 49 additional COVID-19 cases yesterday bringing the infection total to 50,054. However there were no deaths recorded for the period, leaving the total deaths at 1,061.
— Russia’s Saint Petersburg posted record COVID-19 deaths Monday as it prepares to host a Euro 2020 quarter-final despite the worrying spread of the Delta variant, which is fuelling infection surges around the world and causing a headache for major sporting events.
— Japan’s Olympic chief said Monday there was “no way” to ensure zero virus cases among teams arriving for the Tokyo Games, as officials prepare to tighten screening procedures.
The United States is the worst-affected country with 603,967 deaths from 33,625,039 cases. After the US, the hardest-hit countries are Brazil with 513,474 deaths from 18,420,598 cases, India with 396,730 deaths from 30,279,331 cases, Mexico with 232,564 deaths from 2,505,792 cases, and Peru with 191,899 deaths from 2,048,115 cases.
