COVID-19: Here’s what you need to know today
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The novel coronavirus has infected more than 181.3 million people, leaving more than 3.9 million dead across 196 countries and territories.
The majority of those infected have recovered and many countries have rolled out vaccine campaigns as economies start to recover from the pandemic.
— Jamaica recorded 26 new COVID-19 cases Monday and four deaths, bringing the country’s total confirmed cases to 50,080 and the death toll to 1,065.
— The St Kitts and Nevis government has extended the state of emergency (SOE) by a further six months, with Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris telling Parliament it is a critical tool in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
— More than three billion COVID-19 vaccines have been administered around the world, an AFP tally found Tuesday, as countries race to contain the virulent Delta variant that is fuelling outbreaks all over the globe.
— India on Tuesday authorised the emergency use of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine as it worked to ramp up inoculations in the wake of a record-breaking surge in infections and deaths.
— The United States led calls at a G20 meeting Tuesday for greater global cooperation in light of the coronavirus crisis as China insisted that multilateralism should not just be a slogan.
— G20 ministers led by the United States said Tuesday that the coronavirus pandemic showed the need for greater global cooperation, as African nations sought help to develop their medical infrastructure.
— The United States is the worst-affected country with 604,115 deaths, followed by Brazil with 514,092, India with 397,637, Mexico 232,608, and Peru 192,163.
