DANE NELSON ON TRADITION ARRIVES IN TIME TO NICK HIS UNCLE
TRADITION, under strong handling and a well-timed run from jockey Dane Nelson, got up in the nick of time to beat his uncle Richard Reid aboard Mirabilis on the line in a three-year-old and upwards claiming ($450,000 – $400,000) event at 6 furlongs (1,200m).
Tradition wasn’t sharply away out of the starting blocks as the Gary Crawford-conditioned charge raced in mid pack behind the early pacesetters Mother Nature (Oneil Mullings), Super Amia (Daniel Satchell) and Just An Illusion (Javaniel Patterson) going into the turn.
Turning for home, Tradition was still off the pace as Mirabilis surged through on the inside rails to take up the running with 1 ½ furlongs to go. Inside the final furlong (200m), Nelson produced his mount on the outside of runners and Tradition surged through for the win. Miss Linda Wray (Matthew Bennett) was third. The winning time was 1:16.1.
JOCKEY OSHADANE ROBINSON’S FIRST CAREER WIN
APPRENTICE Oshadane Robinson, who started his career on December 7, 2019, earned the first win when he piloted the Borris McIntosh-owned and -trained first-time runner Silver Tapp to victory in a native-bred five-year-old and upwards maiden condition contest going 6 ½ furlongs (1,300m).
At the off, Silver Tapp was among the backmarkers as Little Red (Osive Donegal) and Northern Ridge (Dick Cardenas) mixed it up on the front end. The two runners continued their battle down the backstretch and into the lane, with Little Red gaining the advantage.
Though swerving about in deep stretch, Silver Tapp hit top gear and powered away from rivals to win by 3 ¼ lengths. Little Red was second and Lyceum (Natalie Berger) third. It was the first win for the season for McIntosh.
MR UNIVERSE OBLIGES
MR Universe , trained by Gregory Forsyth and ridden by Anthony Thomas, easily obliged as the favourite in the high-claiming ($1 million – $800,000) event for three-year-olds and upwards travelling down the five-straight course.
Mr Universe, as is typical, showed early speed along with with Anaso (Dick Cardenas) and Dwayne Star (Romario Spencer) for the first two furlongs. Mr Universe and Anaso drew away from the rest of the field coming across the dummy rails, engaging in a tussle of their own.
Inside the final half-furlong (100m) Mr Universe sprinted clear and went on to win by 2 lengths in a time of 59.2 for the distance. Papito (Tevin Foster) came from behind horses for second, with Loose Ball (Roger Hewitt) getting third.
VANQUISHER COMES GOOD DOWN THE FIVE-STRAIGHT COURSE
THREE-YEAR-OLD chestnut colt Vanquisher outran rivals in a native-bred three-year-old maiden condition race over 5 furlongs (1,000m) straight.
With Matthew Bennett riding for trainer Ray Phillips, the Bern Identity offspring made one move to win the event by 4 ¼ lengths in a time of 1:00.2 for the distance.
Vanquisher shot to the front at the start, ahead of Curlin’s Flight (Robert Halledeen), Letters In Gold (Tevin Foster) and Diamond In The Sky (Dick Cardenas). Once Vanquisher was straightened coming across the dummy rails it was smooth running from there on as the chestnut colt drew away for an easy win.
