Mahogany returns in Monday’s Easter Cup Sprint

The historic three consecutive days of racing at Caymanas Park come to an end on Easter Monday (April 18), with the $1.05-million Easter Sprint Cup taking the spotlight on the nine-race card.

A field of 14 runners will compete in the three-year-old and upwards non-restricted Overnight Allowance call over 5 ½ furlongs (1,100m).

The analysis of each runner and their chances of winning are published below in post-position order.

Lure of Lucy

1. LURE OF LUCY (USA): (4 b f by Uncle Lino – Ring of Faith) – Lure of Lucy makes her seasonal return after a break of 142 days. Lure of Lucy last raced in November of last year when finishing fourth behind Eroy and current Horse of the Year Further and Beyond in a 7 ½-furlong event. Lure of Lucy is competent at 5 ½ furlongs and has been sighted at exercise with some encouraging spins. The only issue facing Lure of Lucy is the number one draw, from which she must exit in a flash to have any chance of winning.

2. I AM FRED (USA): (4 b g by Golden Lad – Happy Hailey) – Capable runner who has been a model of consistency during his short career. I Am Fred is making his 2022 entry, with this trophy event looking more like an introductory path to another assignment. In addition, starting from the number two barrier is not the best option for I Am Fred, who does his best running from off the pace at longer distances.

3. ANOTHER BULLET: (10 b h by Nasheet – Wisely Noted) – At age 10, this former champion sprinter will be lost among this younger crop of rivals.

4. ROJORN DI PILOT: (6 b h by Liquidity – I’m Magic) – Rojorn Di Pilot is one competitor who can be easily placed in the column of the consistent ones. He is comfortable among these but might need the run having raced last on February 22. If Rojorn Di Pilot is to win, he will have to do so from off the pace.

5. LOOSE BALL: (5 dkb g by Fearless Vision – My Friend Lucy) – Has no chance of winning this trophy race.

Runaway Algo

6. RUNAWAY ALGO (USA): (3 ch c by Algorithms – Misunify) – Runaway Algo comes into this race on the backend of three consecutive victories. Runaway Algo is the youngest of the 14 horses nominated in this event and is on the path of rapid progression which will hold him in good stead racing in Overnight for the first occasion. Victory here for Runaway Algo will underline his ability and lead him to the higher grades, but this foreigner will have his work cut out as he faces well-seasoned and quality opponents.

7. DUNROBIN: (9 b g by Blue Pepsi Lodge – En Vogue) – Has been struggling to find form and that should continue on Easter Monday for Dunrobin.

8. BIG BIG DADDY: (5 dkb h by Natural Selection – Just A Flutter) – The chance of Big Big Daddy winning this one is remote at best.

9. TREVOR’S CHOICE: (6 dkb h by Blue Pepsi Lodge – Queen Adira) – Trevor’s Choice has not raced since July 24 of 2021. This six-year-old is known to be hampered by injuries as evidenced by him being declared a late non-starter (lame) on January 1, 2022. Trevor’s Choice is as fast as they come and can go in front in the blink of an eye. If the right Trevor’s Choice takes to the track on Easter Monday, racing fans are in for a treat.

10. CURLIN’S AFFAIR: (4 ch c by Perfect Curlin – Nuclear Affair) – Curlin’s Affair is seeking his second-consecutive win in the Overnight Allowance grade. This four-year-old faces his toughest task to date, and although he is at the stage of rapid improvement cannot be seriously considered to win among these at this time.

11. HELICOPTER: 5 b g by Storm Craft – Face Tracker) – Has no chance of winning.

12. MAHOGANY: (5 ch g Sensational Slam – Mete-Orite) – Talented runner who is out for the first time this season. Mahogany has ongoing problems which have limited his race appearances during his career. Mahogany has not raced in 212 days, but that is not an issue as he always does well off a break. There is no doubt that Mahogany possesses the requisite class to easily deal with rivals in the Easter Cup, it is just a matter oof whether or not he is fit and proper.

13. ONE DON (USA): (4 ch c by Chitu – Shezacrazygirl) – With so much speed in this quick dash, One Don might have to settle for a lesser share.

14. ALEXA’S LODGE: (5 ch m by Blue Pepsi Lodge – Alexa’s Song) – Will not be a factor.
