Jason DaCosta saddles 100th career win
Despite the impressive win by Power in the $950,000 Simply Magic Cup feature contest, it was trainer Jason DaCosta who stole the limelight on the nine-race programme by saddling his 100th career win at Caymanas Park yesterday.
DaCosta, who started the day on 99 winners, reached the landmark in the day’s eighth race when his charge Sunset Silhoutte won the native-bred three-year-old Non-Restricted Maiden Condition race over seven furlongs (1,400m). Ridden by Anthony Thomas, Sunset Silhoutte (Northern Giant – Ahwhofah) won the contest by 4 ¾ lengths ahead of stablemate Pretty Girl (Omar Walker) in a time of 1:27.3.
The milestone was achieved in record time as DaCosta, who started his career at the park a year ago, became the fastest trainer in history to have won 100 races.
It was the third winner on the day for Thomas as the champion jockey had previously won aboard Quanna for trainer Donovan Plummer in the third race and Sharp Skirt for owner/trainer Welsh Soutar in the fifth race.
Meanwhile, Power, trained by Philip Feanny and ridden by Omar Walker, easily brushed aside rivals to win the feature race – the Simply Magic Cup, a Restricted Allowance II event for three-year-old and upward over one mile.
Power won by 3 ¾ lengths ahead of stablemate Gilbert (Everton Miller) and Stomp The Rhythm (Shane Ellis) in a smooth time of 1:40.3.
Racing continues today with another race card of nine races. The feature event is the Easter Cup, a three-year-old and upward Non-Restricted Overnight Allowance contest going five-and-a-half furlongs. First post is at 12:35 pm.
