Carifta Games: Jamaica mine three gold medals in 800m
Jamaican athletes won three of the four 800m finals on Monday at the 49th Carifta Games being held at the National Stadium in Kingston.
Ainsley Brown produced a strong performance to win the boys’ Under-17 800m, pulling compatriot Rasheed Pryce to bronze.
Brown swept by longtime leader Keeran Sriskandarajah of Trinidad and Tobago in the home stretch and pulled away to win in 1:58.08. The tiring Sriskandarajah (1:58.45) just held off Pryce (1:58.51) in the battle for silver and bronze.
Jamaica’s Andrene Peart had to settle for second in the girls’ Under-17 800 metre behind Michelle Smith of US Virgin Islands, who has showed good form at the Games.
Peart, who left it late, stopped the clock in 2:13.07, some ways behind Smith, who romped the event in a new personal best 2:10.78. Guyana’s Attoya Harvey was third, also in a new personal best 2:14.08.
Smith earlier won silver in the 100m hurdles and gold in the 400m hurdles.
In the meantime, Jamaica’s Rushana Dwyer and Jody-Ann Mitchell finished first and second in the girls’ Under-20 800m.
Dwyer bided her time in second for a long way before sweeping by Barbadian Layla Haynes to win in 2:07.35. Mitchell, who seemed out of medal contention at one point, closed rapidly for second in 2:09.73 ahead of the tiring Haynes (2:10.58).
Jamaica’s J’Voughnn Blake claimed his second gold medal of the 49th Carifta Games as he topped the boys’ Under-20 800m in fine style.
Blake, who won the 1,500m on Friday, took command of the event from start, signalling intentions of an attempt at the record 1:48.95, but fell just short in the end at 1:49.89.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Nathan Cumberbatch (1:51.86) held off the other Jamaican (1:51.96) in the battle for silver and bronze.
