Andre Lowe returns to Observer as sports content manager
Highly-acclaimed journalist Andre Lowe has returned to the Jamaica Observer to lead the company’s sports publications across the print, digital, and broadcast platforms in his role as sports content manager.
Lowe, who had left the Observer to join the Jamaica Gleaner where he rose to the post of sports editor, then went to The Royal Gazette in Bermuda, will take up his new post on Monday, May 2, 2022.
He has almost two decades of experience in journalism and is regarded regionally and internationally as a leader in his field.
“I am extremely thrilled for the opportunity to return to the Jamaica Observer. This represents the fulfilment of an important ambition of mine and I am eager to get going; to work with the team to ensure that we continue to disrupt and push the boundaries while meeting and surpassing our objectives,” said Lowe.
The 38-year-old recently delivered the world exclusive on the positive drug test and subsequent exclusion from the Tokyo Olympic Games of American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson and has led the coverage from numerous international events such as the Olympic Games, World Athletics Championships, Commonwealth Games, World Relays, Fifa Women’s World Cup, international cricket, Formula One, Cricket World Cup, UEFA Champions League, among others.
Lowe’s expertise has also seen him being recruited by several major international print and broadcast outlets and has appeared on ESPN, CNN as well as in English newspapers The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, and several others.
He was awarded the Press Association of Jamaica award for best breaking news story of 2021 and has won Sports Journalist of the Year honours on four occasions. Lowe was also recognised internationally in 2013 as the Sports Journalist of the Year by Nubian Times, an organisation based in Manchester, England.
He is a director of the Caribbean Sports Journalists Association and is a member of the Media Committee at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association.
“We are certainly happy to have Andre back home at the Observer. He is one of the finest sports journalists produced by this country and his skill and knowledge of his craft can only further enhance our output,” said Observer Executive Editor, Publications Vernon Davidson.
“He is joining a tremendous, hard-working team that has been hitting sixes in coverage, particularly since the resumption of sporting events after the lockdown triggered by the novel coronavirus pandemic. Our readers and advertisers, across all our platforms, have much more to look forward to,” Davidson added.
In addition to driving the editorial output for sports across the group, Lowe will be charged with developing and executing brand-aligned products that will have a strong impact on both revenue and market share.
“There is total alignment and complete motivation. We share the same vision for the brand and there is a clear understanding of what steps we need to take. We have a very strong team in place and we believe that the Jamaica Observer Media Group is best positioned to consistently deliver the most compelling content across our various platforms and develop into the leading sports media outlet in the region and a reference point in the global space,” Lowe said.
“This is an awesome responsibility and an exciting challenge and I wish to thank the management of Jamaica Observer Limited for the confidence that they have shown from the onset, and even before I was finally able to make this move,” he added. “It is an exciting year for sports and I can’t say too much, but we have some really interesting things lined up which are sure to add value to all our stakeholders.”
