Reggae Boy Bobby Reid joins Fulham feast
LONDON, United Kingdom (CMC) – Reggae Boy Bobby Reid netted his eighth goal of the campaign as Fulham clinched the English Championship title with a crushing 7-0 win over Luton Town on Monday.
Aleksandar Mitrovic stole the show, however, by reaching a record 43 goals in a season with a brace while Tom Cairney scored the team’s 100th goal of the campaign with a superb first-half strike.
Bristol-born Reid, 28, made it 5-0, running between two defenders before slotting the ball beyond goalkeeper Matt Ingram, who was drafted in by Luton on an emergency loan from Hull City just 24 hours before kick-off.
Mitrovic, a 27-year-old Serbian, added a seventh in injury time to become the most prolific second-tier scorer of a single campaign in the modern era.
Fulham have now scored 106 goals and are just two away from matching Manchester City, who were the last team to surpass 100 goals in English football’s second tier with 108 in 2001-02. Fulham face Sheffield United away on the final day of the season.
The defeat was Luton’s heaviest of the season and saw them drop a place to sixth. While a place in the play-offs is still in their hands, they need to beat Reading in their final game to ensure Middlesbrough cannot overtake them.
Celebrating their return to the Premier League, Fulham boss Marco Silva said: “The aim to be champions was always in the dressing room. We knew what we wanted from the first day.”
St Kitts and Nevis striker Harry Panayiotou’s late equaliser earned Aldershot a point in a 2-2 draw at Maidenhead in the fifth-tier National League.
The 27-year-old former Leicester youth striker, whose mother is Kittitian, converted a cross from Grenada international Jacob Berkeley-Agyepong to leave honours even.
It was the first goal for Panayiotou, who was at Aldershot between 2019 and 2021, when he netted 16 times, since his return to the club in January following a five-month stint with Scottish side Livingston.
