More than $3m in cash prizes for regional INSPORTS primary school champs
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, has announced prize money of $1,125,000 for each of the three regional primary school meets that will lead up to the inaugural staging of the National Athletics Junior Championships (‘Junior Champs’) for Boys and Girls at the National Stadium between May 26 and 28, 2022.
“For the Eastern Championships, the Central Championships, and the Western Championships, the school placing first will get prize money of$ 250,000; the second-placed school will receive $200,000 and the third-placed school, $150,000,” Grange said in a statement on Wednesday.
The schools placing fourth to 10th will get prize money of $75,000 each. The total prize money for the three regional meets is $3,375,000.
Lyssons Primary School of St Thomas emerged as the champion school of the three-day Eastern Championships which ended at Stadium East Wednesday afternoon.

Rounding out the top five were St Richards Primary School which came in second, Harbour View Primary, third; Windward Road Primary, fourth; and St Patrick’s Primary, fifth.
The next championship is the Central Championships which will be at the GC Foster College of Physical Education and Sport in a St Catherine from May 9 to May 11, while the Western Championships will be held at St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) between May 12 and 14.
“There will be a great atmosphere at the grand finale, Junior Champs, at the National Stadium on May 26, 27 and 28. The INSPORTS Primary School Champs has uncovered really talented youngsters whom we have nurtured,” Grange said.
The eight fastest times recorded for each track event for each of the three regions in each class category will advance to the Junior Champs, as will the eight athletes over the three regions who measured the highest or longest jumps or throws.
