G C Foster clip CASE to lift Intercol football crown
Ty Wedderbourn’s late strike was enough to crown G C Foster College of Physical Education and Sport the 2022 Intercol Football champions as they got by College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE) at the Mico University College field on Saturday.
The lone goal came in the 86th minute.
Both teams were meeting for the third time this season with CASE winning the first contest 1-0, and GC Foster coming out 2-0 victors in the second.
In a highly competitive game, referee Yvette Stephenson kept the players controlled as GC Foster got CASE on the defensive from early through Jahnoy McIntosh, Kajay Thompson and Richard Gunter.
But CASE’s Ryan Laing, Ikel Grant and Jaffie Smith were able to keep them at bay.
GC Foster’s Keino Hines got a sitter midway the first half as he received the ball from Thompson, and with only Davion James at his mercy, found the side netting.
Shortly after, CASE indicated they were in the game through attacks co-ordinated by Jordan Gayle, Kavish Bowes and Tyreese Bryan but they failed to score as both teams ended the first half ended goalless.
The second half saw much of the same as the teams continued to find the back of the net. However, the deadlock was broken four minutes before the final whistle as Thompson surged down the right flank and passed to Brian Breakenridge with the CASE defence caught flat-footed and custodian Renardo Stone beaten. Breakenridge passed to Wedderbourn who rolled the ball into an open goal.
“Both teams wanted it and we had enough to take it and we give thanks we won. CASE was a very physical team,” said the winning Coach Dwight Angus
Marlon Hylton, the CASE coach, praised his team’s effort.
“I am so proud of this team; and we restricted them, got them on the counter, but did not convert. It is sad losing this way but they have done well,” Hylton said.
