Three Hanover health centres face closure due to NWC strike
HANOVER, Jamaica — At least three health centres in Hanover are on the verge of shuttering their doors as a result of the ongoing strike by the State-run National Water Commission (NWC).
The affected locations are Sandy Bay, Cave Valley and Logwood health centres.
“We are trying to get some water for these places but up to now it has been unsuccessful,” Dr Kaushal Singh, the medical officer of health for Hanover told OBSERVER ONLINE on Wednesday, day two of the strike.
While the health centres have tanks, he said those resources were depleted by the end of the day on Tuesday.
“We need running water to run our clinics so that they can clean their hands because at this time infection control is very important,” Dr Singh stressed.
NWC workers who are angered by the Government’s handling of their compensation review cut supply to customers on Tuesday, but by late afternoon Labour Minister Karl Samuda assured the country that water should soon be back in their taps.
However, many communities across the country are still without water. Talks between the NWC and trade union officials are expected to resume today.
