Thompson-Herah breaks meet record in Puerto Rico Classic

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico— Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah ran a meet record 10.93 seconds (-0.8m/s) to win the women’s 100m title at the Puerto Rico International Athletics Classic 2022 on Thursday.

Thompson-Herah, who was third best after the preliminary rounds with 11.22 seconds, easily bested the field with Trinidad and Tobago’s Michelle-Lee Ahye second with 11.06 seconds and American Shania Collins third with 11.0 seconds, just ahead of Tamari Davis who ran a personal best 11.06 seconds.

Jamaica’s Natalliah Whyte was fifth in 11.13 seconds.

Meanwhile, Nigel Ellis was fourth in the men’s 100m with a season’s best 10.16 seconds (-0.2m/s), the best of the three Jamaicans who advanced but neither Akeem Blake and Yohan Blake showed up for the final.

American Trayvon Bromell equalled the meet record 9.92 seconds, beating fellow Americans Brando Carnes who ran a personal best 10.02 seconds and Kyree King with 10.11 seconds.
