2005: The fallen oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky is sentenced to nine years in prison, ending the biggest case in post-Soviet Russia. The year-long trial spurred accusations that it was linked to Khodorkovsky’s opposition to President Vladimir Putin.

Democrat John Edwards’ finance fraud case ends in a mistrial. Edwards was accused of misusing funds from donors to hide his pregnant mistress while he ran for president campaign. Fourteen-year-old Snigdha Nandipati of San Diego wins the 85th Scripps National Spelling Bee by correctly spelling “guetapens” a French-derived word meaning ambush, snare or trap.
