Elaine eases to 100m win in Rabat, smashes own meet record
JAMAICA’S Elaine Thompson-Herah continued her build-up to the Jamaican National Championships and the World Athletics Championships by breaking her own meet record at Sunday’s Diamond League meeting in Rabat, Morocco, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, running 10.83 seconds (0.3m/s) to win the women’s 100m.
A week after she ran a season’s best 10.79 seconds at the Prefontaine Classic at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, Thompson-Herah cruised to the win coming off a cautious start, taking over the lead from fellow Jamaican Natasha Morrison midway the race, and ran away to win easily, breaking the 10.87 seconds she had set in 2017.
“I feel amazing about the race today,” Thompson-Herah said afterwards, “This is my third time in Rabat and I’m super excited about the new meeting record of 10.83 seconds.”
The five-time Olympic gold medallist and two-time double Olympic sprint champion said she would compete in the Rome Diamond League meeting on Thursday as she said, “I’m following the same process and keeping up the same pace”.
It was the fifth sub-11.00 seconds run for Thompson-Herah who has a season’s best 10.79 seconds that she ran a week ago at the Prefontaine Diamond League meet in Eugene, Oregon.
Marie Jose Ta Lou of the Ivory Coast was second with a season’s best 11.04 seconds and Morrison placed third in 11.22 seconds, also a season’s best for her.
Diamond League leader Shanieka Ricketts was second in a closely contested women’s triple jump with a season’s best 14.43m (-0.3m/s), as the top three finishers were separated by four centimetres.
Thea Lafond of Dominica took the event with 14.46m (0.3m/s) while Neja Filipic of Slovenia was third with a personal best 14.42m (-0.4m/s).
World Indoor bronze medallist Stephenie Ann McPherson ran a season’s best 51.37 seconds for third in the women’s 400m after setting the early pace.
Olympic silver medallist and world leader Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic ran a well-timed race to win with 50.10 seconds while Sada Williams of Barbados was second with a season’s best 50.74 seconds.
Olympic semi-finalist Jaheel Hyde ran a season’s best 49.35 seconds for fifth in the men’s 400m hurdles that saw an injury to Olympic champion and world record holder Karsten Warholm of Norway who was making his season debut.
Warholm hit the first hurdle and then stopped after the next one, clutching the back of his right thigh.
American Khallifah Rosser ran a meet record 48.25 seconds to beat the previous 48.93 seconds set in 2012 by Felix Sanchez, Rasmus Magi of Estonia was second with 48.73 seconds, and France’s Wilfried Happio was third with 49.27 seconds.
Many-time Jamaica champion and World Championship medallist Fedrick Dacres retired after one round of the men’s discus throw after recording a mark of 61.34m.
