What’s in a name?
Dear Editor,
I was amazed to see a report in the Jamaica Observer that the new, state-of-the-art homeless shelter on King Street is to be named the Desmond McKenzie Transitional Centre for the Homeless.
Minister of Local Government McKenzie appears to be a very hard worker who has contributed “selfless service to the poor and vulnerable”.
Despite this, however, it is concerning that Minister McKenzie, under whose purview this building was conceived and constructed, would accept this seeming honour from his Jamaica Labour Party colleagues serving in the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation.
Hopefully, this is not a new trend to honour sitting Members of Parliament for work for which they are paid.
