Following a shooting incident at a concert in Guyana where he was the headline act, dancehall artiste Skeng has been banned from performing at public events in that Caribbean country.

The announcement was made by the country’s public security minister, Robeson Benn, who said “no artiste like Skeng will ever come again into this country under the signature of any person from the Ministry of Home Affairs or from the Guyana Police Force.”

Benn was speaking at the opening of the Community Relations Department of the Guyana Police Force on Friday morning.

The minister went on to state that while Skeng and any other artiste who have a “record of promoting vulgar and lawless behaviour including the firing of gunshots in public places” will not be granted permission to appear on a public stage, they could still make private club appearances and “behave as badly as they want.”

The backlash against the Jamaican ‘trap dancehall’ star stems from a shooting incident at last month’s ‘Baderation’ concert in Guyana. According to reports, Skeng, whose given name is Kevaun Douglas, was approximately 15 minutes into his set when an unidentified patron discharged his firearm in a gun salute as the deejay performed the hit single, Protocol.

The Guyana Police Force had announced that an investigation was launched into the shooting incident.

Skeng is not the first Jamaican artist to be banned in Guyana. Mavado and Bounty Killer were both banned briefly back in 2008 after a concert they headlined ended abruptly following sporadic gunshots. And in 2011, music from incarcerated deejay Vybz Kartel was forbidden from being played on local airwaves.
