Tremaine’s Trelawny Festival Queen
NEWLY crowned Trelawny Festival Queen Tramaine Campbell says she will be focusing on the issue of mental health and building its awareness as her parish project.
She made the disclosure following her victory in the annual competition held at the Royalton White Sands Resort in Trelawny on Sunday.
“My project involves me partnering with the Ministry of Health as well as a non-profit organisation in Kingston to bring more awareness to the Jamaican people about mental health and how important it is, as well as helping persons to better identify persons with mental illnesses and mental disorders and just how to be supportive,” she told the Jamaica Observer.
“I feel like, as a Jamaican society, we don’t pay enough attention to that and I just want to use the platform that I have now to ensure that I bring awareness to it as much as possible,” the Duncans native continued following her win.
On Sunday evening, Campbell walked away winner from a field of six contestants taking a number of sectional prizes, which included Most Culturally Aware, Most Active Contestant in the Community, and Most Popular on Social Media.
“I’m absolutely elated, actually humbled by the decision really. It’s an honour to be able to have the position to serve my parish. I did not see this coming, I will not lie to you, but I am very, very happy and I’m just looking forward to doing great things for my parish,” she explained while beaming with obvious joy.
Campbell now turns her focus to the National Festival Queen Competition slated in August. She is intent on bringing back the title to the parish which had its last winner in 2006.
“The best mindset is just to be myself really. That’s what got me here, that’s why I won and that’s what I’ll be continuing with and that’s what I can truly authentically be,” she added.
The evening also saw Kadya Moncrieffe walking away with the first runner-up prize and the sectional prize for Best Performer, while third-place contestant was Sashana Davy, who also copped the sectional prize for Most Poised.
The prize for Most Congenial went to Nolisia Barnett.
