31 killed in 35 fatal motor vehicle crashes during the month of June – RSU
Director of the Road Safety Unit (RSU), Deidrie Hudson Sinclair, is renewing the call for road users to exercise caution on the nation’s roads as statistics show that 31 persons have been killed in 35 fatal motor vehicle crashes in the month of June.
During the month, fatalities decreased by 10 per cent while fatal crashes decreased by nine per cent when compared with similar period in 2021. This is according to the latest statistics released by the RSU.
The statistics show that pedestrians account for 17 per cent of the road users killed during June 2022.
The statistics for the month also show that:
· Drivers of private motor vehicles accounted for 31 per cent of the road users killed;
· Passengers of private motor vehicles accounted for 17 per cent of the road users killed during the month;
· Motorcyclists accounted for 20 per cent;
· Pillion riders accounted for three per cent’
· Pedalcyclists accounted for eleven per cent;
· There was no fatality reported among public motor vehicle passengers;
· There was no fatality reported among drivers of commercial motor vehicles;
· Vulnerable road users (pedestrians, pedalcyclists, motorcyclists and pillions) accounted for 51 per cent of the road users killed during the month of June.
During the month, males accounted for 97 per cent of all fatalities while the other three per cent was unknown.
The parish of St James was responsible for 17 per cent of the road deaths during the month; it was followed by St. Catherine and Westmoreland with 14 per cent each.
