DaCosta, Thomas team up for triple win
Trainer Jason DaCosta and jockey Anthony Thomas stole the limelight on the nine-race card by combining to win three races together, including with She’s My Destiny in the main feature at Caymanas Park yesterday.
She’s My Destiny, who had returned to competitive racing from a four-month break, easily brushed aside rivals to win the $1.1-m top-rated Restricted Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-old and upwards over five-and-a-half furlongs (1,100m)
The four-year-old chestnut filly was put to the front by Thomas and was never headed as She’s My Destiny came home by an ever-increasing 8 ½ lengths in a time of 1:06.0 for the distance. The Good Witch (Dick Cardenas) finished in second place, while Azaria (Aaron Chatrie) got up for third spot in the nine-horse field.
Bred by Bern Identity out of the traditional mare Woman Is Boss, She’s My Destiny was winning for the fifth time from eight career starts and earned over $2.7m in stakes.
The DaCosta-Thomas combination then struck in the sixth race, a Restricted Allowance V event for four-year-old and upward fillies and mares over five furlongs straight (1,100m), with Midnight Blue. The Blue Pepsi Lodge – Grace Marie offspring Midnight Blue, who was coming off a year’s break, easily won by 3 ½ lengths in a time of 1:01.2, beating Diamond Star (Shane Richardson) and Jahsendblessings (Javaniel Patterson).
The cap came in the very next race when DaCosta and Thomas teamed up with It’s A Boy to win the four-year-old and upward Retsricted Allowance III/IV event over seven-and-a-half furlongs (1,500m). It’s A Boy came from well off the pace to beat Press Conference (Youville Pinnock) by a length and quarter in a time of 1:35.1. Classical Orb (Bebeto Harvey) was third.
With those three winners, DaCosta increased his lead atop of the trainer’s standings over Gary Subratie and three-time defending champion Anthony Nunes, while Thomas, who started the day two winners behind Dane Dawkins, regained his lead in the jockey’s race. Thomas, on 50 winners, leads Dawkins on 49 winners by one winner. Dawkins had one winner in Longie Lala.
Meanwhile, Devonte, trained by Nunes and ridden by Tevin Foster rallied in deep stretch to beat Last Bid (Reyan Lewis) by a neck in the $950,000 John Clifton Memorial Cup, a native-bred three-year-old maiden condition race over six furlongs. The final time for the race was 1:16.2.
Racing continues this weekend with races on Saturday and Sunday.
