Spice to get ‘Emancipated’
August is set to be a big month for the newly crowned ‘Queen of the Dancehall’, Spice. The female deejay, who celebrates her birthday on August 6, will also be launching her latest album, Emancipated on August 19.
This new album follows on the heels of her 2021 project 10, which was her debut studio album and released by VP Records on her birthday. The album would go on to earn Spice a Grammy nomination in the Best Reggae Album category.
Emancipated’s lead single Clap Clap was released last Friday and, according to the deejay, this single represents a part of the diversity that is this project.
“The album is being distributed by United Masters. The video is also officially out for Clap Clap which is the first song. On August 19 you will be getting the full album, it’s so many different songs, so diverse. I have a song on it called Same Mouth, which is talking about the same mouth that will cheer you on but when your reach to a success, they will also come and say, ‘Lawd, mi never know she was gonna get so big’ and the same mouth will tear you down. Mi nuh want fi let the puss outta the bag too much, but I can say there is a lot of different types of music that I know my fans will enjoy,” she told the Jamaica Observer.
Spice worked with a number of producers on this project, including global superstar Shaggy whom she has described as her friend and mentor. On 10 Spice collaborated with Shaggy and Sean Paul on the hugely popular single Go Dung Deh.
“Yuh know mi nah lef out Shaggy. Everywhere mi go mi haffi talk about my mentor Shaggy. He is someone that I absolutely admire and love. I happy that I met him and he’s a part of my team. I call him my hero because I feel like he saved me so I can’t do anything without him. JB is also a project on Emancipated as well as myself Spice Official Ent, I produced Clap Clap,” said Spice.
Spice notes that the two albums, Emancipated and 10 are somewhat different, with the upcoming album representing more of her brand — authentic Jamaican dancehall.
On Friday night, Spice was crowned ‘Queen of the Dancehall’ at Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay, St James.
