CDT Jamaica returns to the stage with ‘Streams’: A tribute to resilience and legacy

After a hiatus marked by community service and creative renewal, the internationally acclaimed CDT Jamaica has announced its 2026 performance season, to be held under the theme “Streams”.

The season kicks off this weekend March 7-8, at The Little Theatre in Kingston before heading to South Florida for a highly anticipated international showing at the Miramar Cultural Center on March 14 under the distinguished patronage of Oliver Mair, Jamaica’s Consul General. Tickets are available at cdtjamaica.org.

According to Dr Sade Bully Bell, artistic director of CDT, this year’s season represents the fluid continuity of dance and the persistent spirit of the Caribbean people. This return is particularly poignant as it marks the company’s first major production since suspending operations to aid in relief efforts following Hurricane Melissa.

“Together our dancers used the pause in performance to attend to devastated communities. The pause has now ended and I am beyond thrilled to see our dancers return to where they truly belong – the stage. They have been awaiting this moment, putting in the work, and they are more than ready to reclaim their space, step into the light, and shine brighter than ever,”
she said.

Dr Sade Bully-Bell, Artistic Director of CDT

CDT was formed as a legacy company to honour the late Tony Wilson, who founded The Company Dance Theatre in 1988. A central pillar of this year’s production is a tribute to his immense contribution to Jamaican arts and culture. The season features two of his seminal works, “Sparrow” (1999) and excerpts from “Rooted in the Spirit” (2010), the latter which pays homage to the late Professor Rex Nettleford, founder and artistic director of the National Dance Theatre Company, where Wilson also performed as a principal dancer and master choreographer.

Oliver Mair, Jamaica’s Consul General to the Southeastern United States, who serves as the season’s distinguished patron for the Florida performance stated, “I am honoured to be the Patron of the upcoming Company Dance Theatre (CDT) production. Without question, the CDT is one of finest dance troupes to grace the stage in the region. We will also honor the Founder and Artistic Director of CDT, the late Tony Wilson, one of Jamaica’s all time finest choreographers. Not to be missed!”

Bully-Bell and associate artistic director, Renée I McDonald, have carefully crafted the 2026 repertoire which blends technical excellence with cutting-edge modern dance. Key highlights include:

● “Streams” (2025): The season’s title piece by Tony Wilson, featuring movements led by principals Andrew Bailey and Naomi Campbell;
● “Baby Mama” (2026): A new work choreographed by Dr Bully-Bell set to the music of Big 6 Brass Band.
● “The Return” (2025): A powerful spiritual exploration by guest choreographer Khalia Campbell.
● “Baddie Language” (2023): A high-energy piece by Steven Cornwall featuring a soundtrack of Vybz Kartel and Buju Banton.
● “Mapping” (2025): A celebration of self-actualization by guest choreographer Shavaughn Byndloss.
