1958: Criticised for allowing the Soviet Union to launch the first man-made satellite to orbit Earth (Sputnik 1, on October 4, 1957), US President Dwight D Eisenhower signs legislation this day that creates NASA.

1588: The Spanish Armada, the great fleet sent by King Philip II of Spain to invade England, is first sighted by the English off Lizard Point, Cornwall. The English defeat the Spanish Armada in the Battle of Gravelines.
1609: Samuel de Champlain shoots and kills two Iroquois chiefs at Ticonderoga, New York, setting the stage for French-Iroquois conflicts for the next 150 years.
1656: Poles under John Casimir are defeated at Warsaw by combined Swedish-Brandenburg force.
1696: Russian forces of Peter the Great take Azov from the Turks.
