An Emancipation Day stroll for Mahogany
As expected, it was an Emanicipation Day stroll for the top-rated Mahogany in the $1.7m Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BG&LC) Trophy feature race at Caymanas Park on Monday.
Bred by Sensational Slam out of the Traditional mare Mete-Orite, Mahogany, after toying with rivals early in the event, accelerated in deep stretch to win the three-year-old and upwards Open Allowance call over five-and-a-half furlongs (1,100m) by an easy 5 ¼ lengths on a common canter. The five-year-old chestnut gelding stopped the clock in a time of 1:05.1.
When the starter opened the gates, Mahogany was hustled by Panamanian jockey Dick Cardenas to take up a slim lead ahead of Lure of Lucy (Anthony Thomas) and God of Love, under Jordan Barrett. Still under a snug wrap, Mahogany was tested on the front end by God of Love navigating the half-mile turn, setting up what looked to be a match race.
Mahogany then got fully into his groove in deep stretch, powering clear of rivals and although he was eased down in the final half-furlong, the chestnut colt won handily in registering his third consecutive win from four starts this season. God of Love finished in second place with Curlin’s Affair (Reyan Lewis) getting up for third place. The splits were 23.0 x 45.0.
It was the second winner on the card for Cardenas as the former champion won aboard Legit Boss for champion trainer Anthony Nunes in the $1.2m BG&LC/TOBA Juvenile Dash over three furlongs (600m).
Current leading trainer Jason DaCosta also had two winners on the eight-race programme. DaCosta saddled Sir John (Christopher Mamdeen) in the Jamaica 60 Trophy and Baton Rouge (Phillip Parchment) in the Emancipation Day Trophy.
Racing continues Saturday, August 6 with Blue Vinyl going for Triple Crown glory in the Jamaica Derby over 12 furlongs (2,400m).
