White Horses, Boscobel chase history in SDC T20 final
WHITE Horses of St Thomas and Boscobel of St Mary, both from eastern Jamaica, are focused on making history in today’s final of the Social Development Commission (SDC)/Wray & Nephew National Twenty20 cricket final at Port Rhoades Sports Club (Noranda Bauxite) in Discovery Bay, St Ann.
The first ball is scheduled to be bowled at 2:00 pm.
The Orlando Lyons-captained Boscobel, comprising national all-rounder Alwyn Williams and West Indies Under-19 left-arm pacer Andel Gordon, in addition to a few other prominent players, have been invincible so far this season, having not lost a match.
So though neither team has ever won the SDC T20 national title, Boscobel enter the contest with the favourites tag on their backs. But Team Manager Wayne Lopez is cautioning his players against complacency.
“We are really up for it. We are confident but we don’t want to be overconfident,” he told the Jamaica Observer on Saturday.
“They made it to the final so it means they did some things well, so we’re not taking anybody lightly. We don’t know the players, per se, but we watched them play a couple of games and we see they are a quality team.
“We expect it to be a good final; we don’t think it will be a walkover. If we come out and play 70 per cent or beyond of our ability then I know we’ll win,” Lopez continued.
White Horses, though not star-studded, have former national fast bowler Keno Wallace within their ranks. They have been almost as impressive this season, losing only three matches.
Their skipper Fabian Bennett argued they can upset the applecart.
“The Boscobel team can be beaten; we’ve watched them play a couple of times. We have some plans of how we want to play against them,” he said on the eve of the match.
“I think if we execute our plans [based on] what we’ve discussed, then come tomorrow [today] we’ll be victorious. I think it will be a very tough final, I think it will be very close. A lot of people are saying totals will be over 200 but I don’t think it’s going to be a high-scoring final.
“It’s going to come down to the little details, like who takes the catches. So it will come down to the batting, bowling and fielding and which team does it better,” Bennett told the Observer.
Fairfield United of Manchester lifted the 2021 SDC T20 crown after beating former two-time winners Race Course of Clarendon.
