Naomi making waves
After a series of recent appearances in Canada, including her Paradise Unplugged: Toronto session, singer/songwriter Naomi Cowan is pleased to have been able to connect with her international audience.
“The turnout was exactly what I hoped for, because we kept it small and intimate — I would say we had about 50 people who RSVP’d and came out. The highlight was being able to share insight with the audience in an intimate way and opening up about my journey a bit more. Big bonus was hearing the audience sing along to the lyrics,” she told the Jamaica Observer.
The session was hosted on August 7 at Bar’kada. The singer performed alongside a band called Dub Chronicles.
Cowan also performed at The Carnival Reggae Whine Down presented by Wray & Nephew Canada. The event was held at Chubby’s Jamaican Kitchen. She also made a surprise appearance at JerkFest Toronto along side Kardinal Offishall.
Cowan launched her recording career in 2015 with the songs Naked and Prepare (Ye The Way). In 2017, she covered Things You Say You Love, the original being a big hit in 1967 for The Jamaicans, a rocksteady group, in which her father, Tommy Cowan, was a member. Her hit single Paradise Plum (2018) formed part of the 2019 Reggae Gold Album.
The entertainer, whose mom is Carlene Davis, said her career is on an upward movement.
“My definition of ‘satisfaction’ is a lot different than the everyday person — I am most satisfied when I feel like I’m being true to myself. I am satisfied with the trajectory. My musical journey has been one of an unveiling and shedding of walls I may have kept up. So I am definitely happy with what I’ve done and will continue to do from the inside out,” she said.
Cowan recently voiced the theme song for The 6ixty tournament, the new, fast-paced format of cricket, which commenced on Wednesday in St Kitts & Nevis.
With this new stint, she will be travelling around the Caribbean for the next couple weeks, while simultaneously working on new projects for listeners.
“I’m part of the CPL and the 6ixty cricket tournament as I am the voice of the theme song for the newest tournament and they have asked me to return as an on-air host. I will be travelling throughout the Caribbean for about six weeks. At the same time, I have some new music to release. Then planning for my next project to come out early 2023. We’re in the song selection phase right now,” she said.
