English Premier League action returns

English Premier League action returns this weekend following last weekend’s postponement last weekend due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Champions Manchester City will travel to Wolves in the early kickoff, while Tottenham will aim to tame the “Foxes”, Leicester, in London tomorrow, Saturday, September 17.

Event # 1 – EPL, Wolves vs Manchester City – 6:30 am

After dropping two points in a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa, Manchester City will look to get back on the winning track when they travel away to take on Wolves.

Wolves, enter this match off the back of a hard-fought 1-0 win over Southampton in their last match and will be aiming to build on that victory. However, the sight of the defending champions arriving in town is not the news Wolves fans would relish, as they have lost their last four meetings against City in the league.

The 1-1 draw in their last league match against Aston Villa saw Man City making a slight stumble on their way to the top of the league as they closed the gap on leaders Arsenal to just one point.

Man City remain unbeaten in the league and victory away to Wolves would see them reclaim the top spot, albeit having played a game more than Arsenal. New signing Erling Haaland has hit the ground running for Man City, scoring 10 goals in his first six matches, while City have scored an impressive 20 goals in those six matches averaging three goals per game, compared to a Wolves side that has scored just three goals from their six matches so far. If Man City arrive in a mean mood, Wolves could be in for a torrid 90 minutes.

KEY STATS

Wolves – earned their first win in 13 Premier League games against Southampton last time out, and are looking to win back-to-back home league games for the first time since November 2021.

Man City – are unbeaten in their last 21 Premier League away games (W15 D6) since a 1-0 loss at Spurs in their opening game last season. However, their last two away games have finished level, with City not going three without a win on the road since July 2020.

Both sides – three of Wolves’ four Premier League victories over Manchester City have come in home games, beating them at Molineux in 2003-04, 2010-11, and 2019-20.

The betting tip. Man City win.

Event # 2 EPL – Tottenham vs Leicester – 11:30 am

Tottenham will be aiming to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat to Sporting Lisbon in Champions League midweek action when they host struggling Leicester at home tomorrow Saturday, September 17. Being one of the two teams still without defeat in the league this season, Tottenham will enter this match confident of maintaining their excellent start to the new campaign, given Leicester’s defensive frailties and woeful form as they have lost each of their last three meetings against Tottenham. The home team won their last league game 2-1 against in-form Fulham and have a chance of climbing to the top of the league with a win if Man City fail to beat Wolves away in the early kickoff.

The “Foxes” have failed to land a bite since the start of the new campaign, languishing at the bottom of the table with just one point from their opening six matches. They have scored an average of one goal per game, which has not been enough to pick up points or wins; indeed, this is down to their woeful defence, which has conceded 16 goals in their six matches played so far — the most they have conceded at this stage of the season since 1984. With that said, Leicester’s coach Brendan Rodgers will be hoping to end Tottenham’s unbeaten start to the season win a win as he faces a fight to retain his job at the club after their poor start, following a run of five successive defeats.

KEY STATS

Tottenham – have won each of their last six Premier League home games, their longest such run at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. They last had a longer home-winning run between November 2016 and May 2017 at White Hart Lane (14 games).

Leicester – have lost four of their last five Premier League away games against Spurs (W1), conceding at least three goals in each defeat.

Both sides – Tottenham have won seven of their last nine Premier League games against Leicester (L2), including each of the last three — they have never won four consecutive league games against the Foxes before.

The betting tip. Tottenham win.
