TRELAWNY, Jamaica— Mayor of Falmouth and chairman of the Trelawny Municipal Corporation, Councillor C Junior Gager has revealed that last month’s fire which left three vendors who operate at the Falmouth Market racking up millions of dollars in losses, was sparked by illegal electrical connections.

He made the disclosure during a recent townhall meeting in Falmouth.

Reports are that about 10:37pm on Thursday, August 25, the Trelawny Fire Department responded to a call that a blaze was at the facility.

The fire was put out after which the Fire Brigade commenced a probe to determine what caused the blaze.

“One of the problems that we have there (market) is what caused the fire. We now have the official report and it is people running illegal wires within the market. And the official report says it came from an electrical connection. And so as we go along we are putting things in place where we will be more vigilant in how we operate within the market district,” Gager said.

Gager, who expressed his regret at the loss of goods and business by the vendors, made it clear that the municipal corporation was not responsible for any items left at the facility overnight.

“A fire in the market a few weeks ago is very unfortunate but we ought to let you know that you need to follow the rules of the market that every goods should be taken home at nights. None should be left in the market. We are not responsible for any goods that are left there. The market has an opening hour and a closing hour,” Gager said.
