It’s Arsenal versus Tottenham in crucial North London Derby

Following the international break, top-flight football returns with a bang this weekend. Firstly, struggling Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich host Leverkusen today Friday, September 30, then on Saturday, it’s the massive north London derby as current English Premier League leaders Arsenal host the unbeaten Tottenham at the Emirates in the weekend’s blockbuster match-up.

Event # 1 – GER, Bayern Munich vs Bayer Leverkusen – 1:30 pm

Ten-time reigning German champions Bayern Munich will be hoping that the recent break in the league will see them return to their best form when they welcome Bayer Leverkusen to the Allianz Arena. After an excellent start to the season, Bayern have found the going tough in recent times having gone winless in their last four matches, including a 1-0 loss in their last match before the international break, leaving them fifth in the league. The 1-0 loss to Augsburg in their last match was the first time in 87 matches that the German giants went scoreless in a league game — this is Bayern’s worst start to a season in 12 years and this is the first time since the 2001 season that they have gone four matches without a win.

Bayer Leverkusen, much like Bayern Munich, could not have wished for the international break to have come at a better time as they have been struggling for form, having secured just five points from their opening seven league games, which is their worst return since the 1982 season. Leverkusen are only out of the relegation zone by virtue of a better goal difference than the 16th and 17th placed teams. From their opening seven matches, they have managed just one win, four losses, and two draws. With that said, Leverkusen have proven difficult opponents for Bayern Munich at home, losing just once in their last three visits securing one win and a draw.

KEY STATS

• Bayern Munich — have now lost four of their last five games on matchday 7. Last season, their 2-1 defeat at home to Frankfurt was Julian Nagelsmann’s first loss in charge. Just as they were this term, the Munich side played Leverkusen on matchday 8 and were 5-0 up after just 37 minutes last season.

• Leverkusen — have collected four points from their last three Bundesliga away games against FC Bayern (W1, D1, L1), as many points as they managed across their previous 15 trips to Munich.

• Both sides — FC Bayern have scored in each of their last 32 Bundesliga home games against Bayern Leverkusen, last failing to do so in a 1-0 defeat in October 1989. The Bavarians have only ever put together such a long scoring run at home against Hamburger SV (39 games since 1979).

The betting tip. Bayern win.

Event # 2 EPL – Arsenal vs Tottenham – 6:30 am

The north London derby will have the Emirates shaking with excitement tomorrow (Saturday, October 1), when league leaders Arsenal host their unbeaten London rivals Tottenham in the highly anticipated clash.

The Gunners, Arsenal, will be aiming to retain the top spot in the standing and will welcome Tottenham in a confident mood, following their impressive 3-0 win away at Brentford before the international break. Home advantage has proved decisive in the north London derbies over the past few years and Arsenal have secured four wins and a draw in the last five meetings. Interestingly, this is the first Premier League meeting between Arsenal and Tottenham with one of the sides top of the league since December 2007, with the league leaders Arsenal winning 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

While Arsenal’s impressive start to the season has garnered the most attention, Tottenham have been quietly going about their business, having gone unbeaten so far this season. Tottenham have five wins with away draws against Chelsea and West Ham from their opening seven matches. Indeed, Tottenham travel to the Emirates in excellent form having battered Leicester 6-2 in their last match before the international break. And, fresh in their memories will be their last encounter with Arsenal when they defeated they defeated their arch-rivals in their final match of last season.

KEY STATS

• Arsenal — have lost only one of their last 29 Premier League home games against Tottenham (W17 D11) and are unbeaten in their last 11 against them at the Emirates since a 3-2 loss in November 2010.

• Tottenham — Tottenham are one of two sides still unbeaten in the Premier League this season (W5 D2), with only Manchester City (23) netting more goals than Antonio Conte’s side so far (18). Only once have Spurs remained unbeaten in their first eight games of a Premier League campaign, doing so in 2016-17.

• Both sides — Arsenal have won their last two Premier League home games against Tottenham, last winning three in a row against them between February 2012 and September 2013.

The betting tip. Arsenal win & both teams to score
