KSAFA football to return full force in 2023, promises President Shaw
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) will be bringing back their full calendar of events in 2023. This was revealed by President, Wayne Shaw, on Sunday following the playing of the finals of the championship and major league competitions at the Stadium East Field.
The truncated season saw nine teams participate in the championship league and 10 in the major league. They played each other once in their respective leagues before the top four advanced to the semifinals with Real Mona eventually claiming their first championship league title and Maverley/Hughenden winning their second major league title.
Shaw said that despite the season being different from the norm, the quality of football on display was pleasing.
“It was a shortened season, but there was a lot of good football on display,” he said.
The finals showed it, the first match provided a lot of goals with Maverley defeating Mountain View 3-2 and the Championship finals, Real Mona came out 1-0 against the favourites Meadforest,” he added.
Shaw was happy that football had returned to his federation and indicated the time when the full return will begin next year.
“We are happy that football is back in KSAFA. We’ll be starting back in January again with our major and championship league,” he said.
“It will be a full season where we’ll have each club playing each other twice, home and away and then we’ll come to the finals,” he added.
There was no promotion or relegation of teams in the shortened season, but the normal order of things will return next season.
“We will have promotion and relegation and if the clubs decide, we’ll go and play in the JFF Tier 2,” he noted.
In addition to senior football, junior football programmes will also be back on the KSAFA calendar beginning later this year.
“The next competition in KSAFA will be the Guardian Life Under-10 which will be on the 5th and 6th of December. Then we will resume in 2023 with our normal calendar with the major and super league. We will play our Under-17, Under-15, our Under-13 and our Jackie Bell competition,” he said.
A large sum of cash was paid out to the winning teams this season, something Shaw was also proud to be able to do for the clubs.
The winner of the major league won $700,000, the runner-up received $200,000, third place $150,000 and fourth place won $100,000.
The winner of the championship, Real Mona, took home $1 million, second place $500,000, third place $300,000 and fourth place $250,000.
The season was sponsored by Campari, the Sports Development Foundation and Recycling Partners of Jamaica.
