Pier action in Falmouth
FANS of drifting will have even more to fill their palates when Slippery Wen Wett hits the Falmouth Cruise Ship Pier, this Sunday, October 23.
“This is the first official drift event put on by a local organiser,” Kingsley Scott, event organiser, told the Jamaica Observer‘s weekly Auto magazine.
Scott’s words come on the heels of the recent Red Bull Car Park Drift national qualifier, which introduced an international rule set to the local motorsports community.
Scott is best known for his yearly Slippery Wen Wett series that followed a timed format on the wet surface and made popular on the western end of the island. These originally saw the venue surface covered in water to equalise the difference between the front and rear-wheel cars as they navigated the course marked out by cones. He plans to use this event to set the standard going forward for the sport.
“Some drivers have been complaining that drifting isn’t a timed event. Some even say we don’t have the space. Now, Slippery Wen Wett will be giving all drivers the chance to prove themselves as drifters,” Scott said.
The last Slippery Wen Wett was held at its spiritual home in central Jamaica, Pines Plaza, Junction, St Elizabeth, in August. However, from time to time the event has proved popular enough to visit other venues around the island such as Portmore and St Ann’s Bay. It has been held at the Falmouth location before. This version of Slippery Wen Wett will follow a similar format to that of the Red Bull-staged event. The course will feature nine obstacles that will be scored to a maximum of 300 points. How proficient each driver is with their ability to drift their car through each of the obstacles will determine their outcome rather than outright speed.
