Champs Garvey Maceo among four to advance to quarter-finals
MOCHO, Clarendon — Defending champions Garvey Maceo High, as well as former champions Dinthill Technical, Clarendon College and St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) all advanced to the quarter-finals of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition after completing their second-round ties with wins on Tuesday.
Orlando Lawrence scored four times to lead Garvey Maceo to a big 10-0 whipping of deCarteret College at Garvey Maceo for a 15-0 aggregate; Clarendon College were 5-0 winners over St Mary Technical for a 12-1 aggregate; Dinthill Technical won their 12th game, beating Brown’s Town 4-0 for an 8-1 aggregate while STETHS were held 1-1 by Holmwood Technical but advanced on a 2-1 aggregate.
Meanwhile, the second round will be completed today with 10 more second round ties set to be decided with another four former champions holding advantages.
Frome Technical, Rusea’s High, Glenmuir and Vere Technical won their first leg games and will advance with a least a draw to join the six from Tuesday in the next round.
On Tuesday, Garvey Maceo sent a strong message that they will be a force in the latter stages after their big win, scoring five times in each half.
Eric Forrester scored a brace to support Lawrence, while there were one goal each for Cleo Clarke, Sherwayne Thomas, Shaquille Blackstock and Everald Swaby.
Giovannie Afflick who had scored a hattrick in the first leg on Friday, scored twice for Dinthill Technical to beat Browns Town at Drax Hall with Deshawn Talbert and Daniel Roberts getting a goal each.
York Castle High had an easy 3-0 win over Seaforth High after beating them 4-0 in the first leg, with goals from Rackeem Grizzle, Ahir Dixon and Dahmani Miller.
Shamar Hamilton scored the only goal as Manning’s School got by Charlemont High 1-0 at the STETHS Sports Complex in Santa Cruz for a 4-2 aggregate.
Today, Frome Technical are expected to advance easily over Titchfield High who they lead 3-0 from the first leg game played on Saturday; Rusea’s High are also expected to get back to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2017 when they take a 2-0 lead into their game against Belair High.
Glenmuir High will be home against Tacky with a 2-1 lead while Vere Technical takes a 2-1 lead to Cornwall College.
William Knibb Memorial who are yet to concede a goal in 12 games will go into their second leg game against Petersfield tied at 0-0 at Drax Hall.
