The ban on lewd music may not be effective
Dear Editor,
I support the Broadcasting Commission in its decision to ban lewd music on radio and television. This should have been done a long time ago, but better late than never.
However, I don’t believe the ban on lewd music will be effective or create any significant change in this violent, immoral, and ungodly society. Furthermore, the ban should not only be applicable to radio and TV but should also apply to all forms of entertainment events.
We cannot put a ban in one area only, that is absolutely ridiculous. The powers that be ought to put a stop on lewd music and dirty lyrics on public passenger transport, buses and taxis, including the Jamaica Urban Transit Company buses that play them, too, and, of course, stop them from being played in public spaces, which would be more effective.
The Government, if it truly cares, should do three things to stamp out filthy music in corrupt and crime-polluted Jamaica:
1) Address the the nation on the negative impact of violent music, similar to speeches given in relation to COVID-19
2) Meet with all bus and taxi operators in an effort to get them to agree to discontinue playing violent music.
3) Have the police monitor places where loud and lewd music is played and charge the culprits.
I don’t think the powers that be are serious about this, and they seem to be afraid and powerless.
