Cornwall overturn first-leg deficit to advance in D’Cup
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Former champions Cornwall College engineered another close escape after overturning a 1-2 first-leg deficit to beat Vere Technical 5-3 on penalties in their second-round return game at Cornwall College on Wednesday.
The game, which produced the only reversal from the first-leg results, saw several twists and turns.
Cornwall won 2-1 on the day to lock the teams 3-3 on aggregate. In the penalty shoot-out 13-year-old Cornwall College goalkeeper Carlyle Tinglin saved Vere Technica’s first penalty kick to set up the win.
Victory for Cornwall gives them a spot in the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association daCosta Cup football round-of-16 stage which is set to start Saturday.
Also advancing on Wednesday were former winners Frome Technical, Rusea’s High and Glenmuir High along with William Knibb Memorial, Edwin Allen, Manchester High, Paul Bogle High, Central High and Christiana High.
At Cornwall College, Braxton Richard scored in the 71st and 77th minutes to give Cornwall College the edge but Rajaun Bisasor pulled one back for Vere Technical in time added on as the teams ended 3-3 after 180 minutes.
Cornwall College, who had missed their first two penalties in the season, in games they lost 1-2, were perfect from the spot.
David Reid scored four goals as Glenmuir High swamped Tacky High 8-0 for a 10-1 aggregate win.
Frome Technical beat Titchfield High 3-1 with goals from Stevaughn Spence, Javel Clarke and Akeem Kangol while Cardiff McKenzie scored one for Titchfield. Frome, the former daCosta Cup champions, cruised to a 6-1 aggregate.
Deonjay Brown and Shamour Smith scored first half goals for Rusea’s High as they saw off first-timers Belair High 2-0 for a 4-0 aggregate victory.
Irwin High, the other first-time qualifier lost 0-1 at home to Central High to go down 1-4 on aggregate.
William Knibb extended their unbeaten run to 12 games and are also yet to concede a goal after edging Petersfield High 1-0 at Drax Hall with Mark Lewis scoring in the 59th minute.
Ben Francis KO holders Edwin Allen also advanced with a 3-0 aggregate win over McGrath High; Paul Bogle advanced ahead of Cedric Titus; while Manchester High also breezed past BB Coke 3-1 on aggregate after winning 2-0 on Wednesday.
