Nothing but ‘Luv’
Twenty-five years ago, Everyone Falls in Love became a breakthrough hit for deejay/singer duo Tanto Metro and Devonte. The song, produced by Donovan Germain, was featured on the Up Close and Personal ‘rhythm’ by Penthouse Music.
In 2016, Everyone Falls in Love was sampled by Canadian singer/rapper Tory Lanez for his hit single, Luv.
On December 28, Luv was certified gold in France by the National Syndicate of Phonographic Publishing (SNEP) for sales exceeding 100,000 copies.
In an interview with the Jamaica Observer, Tanto Metro expressed excitement about the certification.
“Well, I feel good to know that after all these years, Everyone Falls in Love was embraced by a younger generation and sampled by Tory Lanez. And now that his song has gone gold, I feel overwhelmed for his achievement. A good song will always prevail,” he said.
Required paperwork for clearance of the sample was handled by his publishing company.
“The overseas company did their part of the job to make sure that everything went through properly. So yes, the sample was cleared,” Tanto Metro disclosed.
Everyone Falls in Love was a number one hit in Jamaica. It gained traction two years later in the United States thanks to airplay on mainstream radio.
The song was picked up by Sony Music which resulted in its crossover success, peaking at number 38 on Billboard‘s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number 88 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart.
Tanto Metro recalled that Everyone Falls in Love was meant for Devonte to record solo.
“It was Devonte who got the riddim from Donovan Germain. At the time we were solo acts and we weren’t thinking of being a duo. He told Germain that he wanted us to record the song together. One day when I came back from the US, we put the song together and then we went to the studio to record it. Big honour and respect to Devonte, he was the one who put down his feet that he wanted to do the song with me,” he said.
Luv is from Tory Lanez’s 2016 debut album, I Told Ya. It was nominated for Best R&B Song at the 2017 Grammy Awards. An official remix of the song features Sean Paul.
The song was a hit in Europe and the United States, charting at number four on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, number 19 on the Hot 100. It also made charts in Slovakia, Sweden, Czech Republic, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia, Belgium, and Portugal.
Luv was certified gold in Denmark and Norway, platinum in the United Kingdom and Canada and double-platinum in the United States.
Tanto Metro and Devonte’s latest single is Hot Gal which features Puerto Rican/Jamaican singer De Royce.
