Portmore aim to keep unbeaten run going against wobbly Tivoli

Portmore aim to keep unbeaten run going against wobbly Tivoli

Portmore United and leaders Mount Pleasant FA are the only two sides without a Jamaica Premier League (JPL) defeat so far this season and both will be hoping all go to plan as they try to preserve their status quo this week.

While fifth-placed Portmore United (14 points) come up against a struggling 12th-placed Tivoli Gardens (six points) in a 3:00 pm curtain-raiser of a double-header at Stadium East today, Mount Pleasant, who head the standings on 20 points, face a much tougher task in fourth-placed Arnett Gardens (14 points) in the marquee Monday night fixture.

Today’s feature contest at Stadium East will see reigning champions Harbour View, in third on 15 points, tackling eighth-placed Waterhouse FC (10 points) at 5:30 pm.

Another double-header at Wespow Park in St James pits 10th-placed Molynes United (nine points) against winless cellar dwellers Faulkland FC (one point) at 1:00 pm, while seventh-placed Montego Bay United (12 points) and ninth-placed Dunbeholden FC (nine points) will square off in the 3:15 pm feature contest.

Elsewhere, 11th-placed Chapelton Maroons (seven points) visit 13th-placed Vere United (five points) for another Clarendon derby at Wembley Centre of Excellence, also at 3:00 pm.

With three wins and five draws to their credit, Portmore United are heavily favoured to maintain their spotless record but will have to thread cautiously in the hunt for a third-consecutive win despite Tivoli Gardens record of three draws and a solitary win in four games.

The West Kingston team and their fans have been growing restless in hopes of improved performances, and the fact that they somewhat have nothing to lose makes them a dangerous contender.

Having secured a third win of the season on last, Waterhouse will be aiming to continue their ascension up the standings at the expense of an Harbour View outfit who had their unbeaten run snapped by none other than Portmore United last week.

Still, the “Stars of the East” know all to well how to bounce back from a defeat, though their mettle will be tested by the Drewsland-based team.

The Montego Bay United versus Dunbeholden FC contest also boasts mouth-watering prospects as both teams possess some worthwhile ability which is expected to come to the fore. Add to that the fact that both teams have identical records of two draws and one loss in their last three encounters and so a close contest seems on the cards.

Prior to that, Molynes United, who registered a long overdue win on last, should make it a quick double, provided they execute accordingly, as Faulkland FC, with a solitary draw being their only positive result since promotion, are not expected to cause them much problems.

Though unbeaten in their last three games, which all ended as stalemates, Vere United are still without a win this season and today’s contest against newcomers Chapelton Maroons represents their best opportunity to fill that column.

However, Chapelton Maroons have so far proven that they are not to be taken lightly and will fancy their chances of taking another big scalp here.

Meanwhile, the in form Cavalier FC, in second on 16 points, and sixth-placed Humble Lions (14 points), both unbeaten in their last three encounters, should serve up a treat in Monday’s curtain-raiser at 5:00 pm and set the tone for what is anticipated to be a classic between Mount Pleasant and Arnett Gardens.
