Daley, James retain 100m titles at Western Champs
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Herbert Morrison Technical’s Deandre Daley and Petersfield High’s Alexis James retained their Class 1 100m titles on Saturday’s second and final day of the County of Cornwall Athletics Association’s (COCAA) Western Championships at St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex.
James ended her Western Champs career on a high as she also lowered her 100m hurdles record when she ran 13.51 seconds earlier in the day to complete the double.
James, the World Under-20 100m hurdles silver medallist last year, had run the previous Western Champs record 13.91 seconds in 2022.
The Class 1 Girls’ 100m final lived up to expectations with the duel between James and Mt Alvernia’s High Carleta Bernard. But the Petersfield High athlete used her bullet start to get into the lead early and held on to win in a hand-timed 11.21 to Bernard’s 11.46.
Daley, the CARIFTA Games Under-20 gold medallist from last year, ran an impressive, hand-timed 10.15 to beat St Elizabeth Technical’s Javorne Dunkley (10.53) and his teammate Jasauna Dennis (10.85).
Lavania Williams of William Knibb Memorial retained the Class 2 Girls’ 100m title; Sharla Bell of Mt Alvernia High won the Class 3; and Giana Murray, also of Mt Alvernia, retained the Class 4 title.
