The Madrid Derby, Newcastle, Manchester United square off in season’s first cup final

Spain will be buzzing this weekend as the derby of the “whites’ see red-hot Real Madrid hosting neighbours Atletico Madrid in the much-anticipated Madrid derby.. Then on Sunday, the ‘fiery’ Manchester United will look to shoot down the ‘Toon Army’, Newcastle, when they and clash in the Carabao Cup final for the first major English domestic trophy of the 2022/23 campaign.

Event # 1 – LA Liga – Real Madrid vs ATL Madrid — 11:30 am

After hammering Liverpool 5-2 in midweek Champions League action, Real Madrid will enter the Madrid derby with their tails up as they look to make it six straight wins in all competitions. Having eased pass Osasuna 2-0 in league action last weekend, Real went to Anfield and destroyed Liverpool in emphatic fashion. Indeed, since returning from the Club World Cup, Real Madrid have won their last two league games scoring six times and not conceding a single goal. However, they trail leaders Barcelona by eight points and cannot afford to slip up against their neighbours if they are to retain their league title.

Atletico Madrid have been in excellent form recently and enter this crucial clash on a six-game unbeaten run which includes four wins, two in their last two games. Atletico Madrid sits fourth in the table and cannot afford to drop points if they are to secure Champions League football next season. With that said, this is a tricky game for Atletico Madrid, as they have struggled against Real Madrid in recent times, losing 3-1 in Copa del Rey action last month, while failing to win away at Real Madrid in their last eight visits. However, Atletico have won seven of their last 11 matches on the road in the league so far, which could see them spring a surprise on their more fancied neighbours.

KEY STATS

Real Madrid – have won their last two LaLiga games and they could win three consecutive games in the competition for the first time since October 2022 (4).

Atletico Madrid – have lost each of their last three visits to Real Madrid in LaLiga without scoring, after winning points in their previous six games on the road against them in the competition (W3 D3). However, Atlético de Madrid have not lost any of their last six games in LaLiga (W4 D2), their longest unbeaten run this season in the competition.

Both sides – Real Madrid have lost just one of their last 13 games against Atlético de Madrid in LaLiga (W6 D6), 1-0 on the road in May 2022.

The betting tip. Draw.

Event # 2 EPL — Manchester United vs Newcastle – 11:30 am

The first major English domestic Cup final takes place this Sunday, February 26, when Manchester United and Newcastle go head-to-head in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley. Manchester United will enter the final as red-hot favourites having lost just once in their last 19 league and cup matches and that defeat came against league leaders Arsenal. With that said, they waltz into the Carabao Cup final by strolling pass Nottingham Forest 5-0 on aggregate, winning 3-0 at Forest before sealing the deal with a 2-0 win at the Theatre of Dreams. The Red Devils, Man United, will hope red-hot striker Marcus Rashford continues his hot-scoring streak against Newcastle as he’s already the leading scorer in this competition, with five goals and has scored 16 goals in his last 17 matches.

On the other side, if Newcastle should create a major upset and win the Carabao Cup, it would bring joy to their long-suffering fans who have been waiting for decades to see their team win a major title. Indeed, aside from winning the second-tier English championship to get back into the Premier League, Newcastle last won a trophy 17 years ago — that was the Inter Toto Cup, a trophy most persons wouldn’t be familiar with. Their only other League Cup final was in 1976 when losing to Manchester City. However, this season has been a revelation for Newcastle, they are now fourth in the league and could well be playing Champions League football next season. They defeated Leicester City 2-0 in the quarter-finals before getting by Southampton 3-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals to seal their berth in the final where they will be aiming to create the upset.

KEY STATS

Manchester United – have won two of their three League Cup meetings with Newcastle (L1), with this the first since a 2-1 home win in September 2012. They are competing in their 10th League Cup final, with only Liverpool (13) ever playing in more. And only Liverpool (9) and Manchester City (8) have won the trophy more often than the Red Devils (5), while only Arsenal (6) and Tottenham (5) have lost more League Cup finals than Man Utd (4).

Newcastle – this is Newcastle United’s first League Cup final since 1976, with their gap of 47 years, the longest gap, between finals in League Cup history. Newcastle have lost their last four major finals (1974, 1998 and 1999 FA Cup finals, 1976 League Cup final) since a 6-2 aggregate win in the 1969 Fairs Cup final against Hungarian side Újpest.

Both sides – these sides met in the 1999 FA Cup final, with Man Utd winning 2-0 to secure the second part of their historic Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble. Indeed, Newcastle United have lost their last eight matches at Wembley, the longest ever losing run by a team at Wembley in history. Their last win at the national stadium was in the 1955 FA Cup final against Manchester City, 67 years, and 295 days since the date of this game.

The betting tip. Man, United win.
